She has an addiction to planners and to do lists. However, as the character of Gracie grew on the page in all of her hot mess glory, she took on some of my own traits. Mental health wasn’t something that was particularly on my radar when I started writing The Stand-In, which is about a reluctant celebrity doppelganger who falls in love with a movie star. I like my characters to be dealing with situations that are as realistic as possible, albeit while dating a celebrity or while being fake engaged to royalty. In fact, many of my favorite rom-coms and authors address societal issues including racism, sexism, inequality, grief, and health, and I love them all the more for it. Let me asterisk that line to hell and back: I am not the only rom-com writer who does this, not by a long shot. Mine also happen to feature characters with mental health challenges. Beach reads, or books good for a cottage hammock, or to read by a cozy fire. These are books with brightly illustrated covers. Neither of these themes should be a surprise to readers as it’s right there in the name: romantic comedy. Rom-coms are first and foremost about love.

The phrase “Big Brother” itself is a literary creation of Orwell.Īll of Orwell’s work touches on politics and class structure. Even for people who haven’t actually read these works, the adjective “Orwellian” elicits thoughts of oppressive, government-controlled society, where “Big Brother” is watching. Perhaps they have also read his futuristic (when it was written) “1984.” Orwell’s name has become synonymous with dystopian political fiction. Most people, when asked if they’re familiar with the works of George Orwell, will answer that they had read “Animal Farm” in high school. The one lesser known exception is his short, bright novel, “Keep the Aspidistra Flying.” I would go as far as to call it charming and delightful. George Orwell’s novels are not exactly where you turn when you are looking for uplifting reading with happy endings. I want to hate to love it and love to hate it. I want the angst so thick I can taste it. If you know me then you know that bully romance is my crack of choice. Not that she is a boy like her friend Lu/Lulu is a girl, but she does not do what she is supposed to. Snapdragon (in the tradition of the women in her family, named after the mother’s favorite flower) is a feisty, independent girl who is not like other girls. Now that I have written the above, I should start back at the beginning. The storylines melt into each other and sometimes you are thrown out of the flow when the new scene does not feel naturally introduced. The other part is how there is no natural stopping point. The bumps come from the fact I was curious where was Snapdragons father? And wondered why Jacks and Jessie never ran into each other over the years? And did Jacks and Vi run into each other? After all, Snap and her mom Vi, seem to live close to Jacks. While there a few bumps to the storyline, it is a neat story about being yourself as well as about friends and family. (See the difference?)įinally: Witches are real, and Snapdragon by Kat Leyh proves it. It is a not so obviously crazy, off the wall realistic fantasy. Second: This is not an obviously crazy, off the wall, fantasy. Regardless of the seemingly obviously crazy, off the wall, fantasy look to it. One: This is a First Second Graphic Novel.
